Updated in 2026 to include a DK weight option!
Wrap yourself in a vortex shaped garter stitch shawl in two colours. This beautiful shawl was our sixth MKAL with Yarn O’clock and ran during July and August 2021.
Slip stitch patterns, stripes and eyelet lace techniques make this a fun and engaging pattern to knit. The pattern is written, not charted.
There are two yarn weights and two sizes to choose from (for 4 ply) and options within the pattern to help manage your yarn usage.
Yarn Weight: 4 ply or DK
Suggested Yarns: 4 ply: Riverknits Chimera, 200m/50g, 1 (2) skeins and Riverknits Nene, 400m/100g skein 0.5 (1) skein, both British Bluefaced Leicester 4 ply and hand dyed in Northamptonshire
or 50 (100) g each of two contrasting 4 ply yarns.
or DK: Riverknits Chimera DK (100% British Bluefaced Leicester Wool, 115m/50g), 2 skeins (Yarn A)
and 100g of a plain coloured DK yarn. I used West Yorkshire Spinners Fleece, (100% British Bluefaced Leicester, 225m/100g) 1 skein (Yarn B)
Needles: 4 ply: 4.5mm circular needles or long straights – circular needles are recommended if making the large size.
DK: 5.5mm circular needles, 80-100cm long
Notions: Tapestry Needle
Sizes: 4 ply: 100 (128) cm x 87 (103) cm, DK: 100 cm x 106cm
Tension: 4 ply: 10cm = 24 sts and 48 rows over Part One pattern after blocking and relaxing.
DK: 10cm = 13 sts and 33 rows over Part One pattern after blocking and relaxing.
Matching tension is not critical for the finished item, but this will affect the quantity of yarn required.
